Pearls of Wisdom ~ Azhaikindran Arangan Episode August 1st 2012

Whatever thoughts that rise in our mind there is a colour associated with it. Sattvic thoughts are white, Rajasic thoughts are red and Tamasic thoughts are black in colour. When an elder person and a sadhu who is always chanting namasankeerthanam visits a home and after he leaves, the inmates of the house say that after that elder visited his home the marriage of his daughter got fixed miraculously or his son got a job. Are these both our own imagination or is there a truth in it? What is in this? Say one who has lots of jealously and competition in his mind and visits our home thinks what a big house this is and how luxuriously they are living, then these convert as thoughts which spread themselves around inside the house and spreads through the cosmic. These thoughts then bring about some harm as
well. If a good person visits, he thinks let these people be happy and good and get more and more things in future, these thoughts bring about lot of goodness to the house. This is the truth and this is the cosmic. If in a home there is constant namakeerthanam, visits by mahangal and satsangham happening always, that house will have the power of God within and even when bad thoughts spread inside this house there will be no ill effects. Thats why our elders have done like this, in each town there is a temple and in each home there is a pooja shelf, a perumal platform to perform swami pooja because in that home there will be godly thoughts prevalent. If such divine activities are happening then in such a home, good things will happen. As much as we can we need to perform a perumal thiruvaradhanam, sahasranama parayanam, namasankeerthanam as per our strength we should keep doing.

The greatness of Ramapiran is being expounded by azhwar, "oru villAl Ongu munneeradainththu ulagangal uyya", ori villAl - the bow in the hands of Sri Rama equal none other, nothing can compare, thus azhwar says here "oru". Sri Rama does not have two kodandams in his hand, there is no equal to the single kodandam and thats why its described as "oru". Ongu muneeradainththu - the waves from the Ocean that hit the shores come with a great sound and height and as they approach one would feel the fear of its hugeness and then once it hits the shores it will fade away. One by one the waves come - Ongu munneer as Sri Rama beholds. Sri Hanumar can easily carry both Sri Rama and Sri Lakshmana on his shoulders but how the full vaanara army can cross? Its not characteristic of Sri Rama to take decision upon himself when there are many people around. When Sri Vibhishana comes to surrender unto him, he discusses with the other people around him about this. That is the hallmark of a great leader.

How to cross this big ocean and reach Sri lanka? First Sri Rama asks Sri Vibhishana about this even though there is Sugreeva and Lakshmana or Angada to whom he could ask. It seems that anyone who has recently come would have some influence about him. Therefore ramapiran always goes around calling "Vibhishana! Vibhishana!". So ramapiran asks him as to how do we cross the ocean. Immediately Sri Vibhishana says just offer Saranagathi, why because thats what worked for Vibhishana. Each one of us can only advise the other on the path one took to achieve their success thats why SrI VibhishanAzhwar who earned success by Saranagathi believes that anything in the world can now be achieved by Saranagathi. Sri Rama also says "yes" being like a child himself. Why because Sri Rama has such a laghu, easygoing, childlike mind. Is it so, if we perform saranagathi, will then the king of the ocean will allow the way through. Why because he had a childlike, with a "spotless mind". Sri Bhagavan will always likes one who is childlike without a childlike mind, mixing well with anyone and being open and indeed all the people.

Even today in a divyadesham called "Tirupullani", Sri Rama is in a sleeping posture on dharba grass and gives darshan as a "Sayana Kolam".

The significance of this is in the dharba grass does Sri Rama lie down to perform Saranagathi to the Lord of the ocean to pave way for him. But the Lord of the ocean did not come in front of Sri Rama. Immediately Sri Rama got angry saying "I have been fasting and sleeping on the dharba grass in saranagathi but still the Lord of Ocean did not come." He calls out to Lakshmana and asks him to bring his bow and arrow. Seeing Sri Rama angry, Izhaiazhwar Sri lakshmana himself is fearful. Usually lakshmanar will speak without making Sri Rama angry. When Sri Rama says that he needs to go to the forest, lakshmana would say, 'Why do we need to go, we have the bow in our hand, I can fight with Dasaratha and put him in jail and will perform pattabhishekam to you. We should not be talking about fate and yielding to it for one who has strength'. Even when Bharata was visiting Sri Rama in the forest, lakshmanar was ready to fight with him. Now seeing Sri Rama angry himself, lakshmana does not bring forth arrows that are powerful but a simple one which is just enough to kill a bird. But Sri Rama says, "Samudram soshaishyAmi" - Bring forth arrows that will destroy the ocean itself. Here Sri Valmiki describes the anger that Sri Rama shows on the Lord of the ocean. Being childlike earlier, Sri Rama did what anyone told him to. If we performed Saranagathi to someone, then even if they saved us or dont save us, we should be steadfast in it. So in Saranagathi one should be in the same place, just praying that we will be saved and thinking about the sharanyan we should stay put. Now Sri Rama who had done saranagathi becomes angry, how can Sri Rama do this? Because although Sri Vibhishana told and Sri Rama listened, Ramar did not know how to do Saranagathi. Actually this is because being a bhagavan himself, he always used to take devotees to saranagathi towards him and not himself performing Saranagathi. Instead the bhagavath swabhavan is presenting itself here.

The Lord of the ocean now says to Sri Rama and says why he did not appear before Sri Rama. A Guru will not request his devotee and ask him to do a thing, he will order him to do. A person at a higher level should give the necessary order to his subordinate and not request him. That is what the Lord of the ocean tells Sri Rama.

"Is this correct, Sri Rama that you are fasting and performing saranagathi to me? That is not befitting you, you must direct an order at me. Because of this I did not come." That is the bhAvam of the Lord of Ocean. It will not look nice for the Lord of the akila loka who also is responsible for the creation of the ocean itself to be like this.

Then Sri Rama starts to construct the Setu bandhanam. A bridge over the ocean, at one time this was mentioned in the puranas at an other time it was the devotees belief. Now the satellite is able to capture the photo of this bridge. Similarly in the triveni sangam, the rivers ganga and yamuna when they join, the river coming from underneath is River Saraswathi (antarvahini), our puranas and itihaasas say. Is there a River Saraswathi flowing underneath, this was a belief earlier which is now being proved by the satellite images. Not only that if the River Saraswathi was brought out, almost all of India's water problems will be solved as the researchers have found out. This was a story then - itihaasa, purana but now as science evolved all this has been proven to the world.
